Approved by the Shanghai Municipal Commission
of Education, SIFT-RMIT International Business School, a Sino-foreign
joint venture between the Shanghai Institute of Foreign Trade
(SIFT) and Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, Australia
(RMIT), is affiliated to and located in SIFT.
·Cooperative Partners
Founded in 1960, the Shanghai Institute of Foreign
Trade (SIFT), originally subordinate to the Ministry of Foreign
Trade and Economic Cooperation, has been placed under the supervision
of the Shanghai Municipality since 1994. The only institution
of higher learning in East China devoted to the education of international
trade and commerce, SIFT cultivates mainly senior specialized
personnel in international business administration and runs diploma,
bachelor's degree, second bachelor's degree, and M.A. programs.
Established in 1887, the Royal Melbourne Institute
of Technology (RMIT), a comprehensive university covering business,
science and engineering, medicine, and liberal arts, is currently
among the largest universities in Australia with an enrollment
of some 70,000 students and offers diploma, bachelor's degree,
master's degree., and Ph.D. programs.
·Educational Objectives
Through international academic cooperation, SIFT-RMIT
International Business School provides education and training
at manifold levels in International Trade, International Business,
Transport and Logistics, and turns out for the society specialized
personnel, highly proficient at English, well grounded in theories
of foreign trade, international commerce and logistics management,
and conversant with actual business operations.
·Educational Advantages
With distinct characteristics of its own in its
curriculum, SIFT-RMIT School of International Business is dedicated
to educating specialized personnel in international trade, international
commerce, and logistics management, which is in urgent need in
China at the moment. Stress is placed on the cultivation of the
skills of the students to utilize their knowledge and the techniques
to improve their interpersonal communication. The language of
instruction in all the courses is English. The textbooks and syllabuses
of courses introduced from Australia and taught by Chinese and
Australian teachers are designated by RMIT. With a well-functioning
educational administration in place, the quality of teaching is
constantly reviewed and assured.

The training
program in International Trade diploma jointly run by SIFT

The first students
majoring in International Trade were admitted. |
1998 |
Upon the approval
of the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Education, SIFT-RMIT
School of International Business was set up. |
1999 |
The International
Trade diploma training program witnessed its first graduates.
An agreement in the cooperation of the
undergraduate program in Transport and Logistics Management
was reached between SIFT and RMIT, upgrading their cooperation
from diploma program to bachelor's degree undergraduate
program.
The Academic Degrees Office of the State
Council formally approved the SIFT-RMIT bachelor's degree
program in Economics (Transport and Logistics Management),
entitled to confer a degree from Australia. |
2000 |
The program
in Transport and Logistics began to enroll students, and
SIFT became one of the first universities in Shanghai being
granted the License in Cooperative Education with Foreign
Partners by the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Education. |
2001 |
SIFT was awarded
2001 Shanghai Municipal Second Prize for Outstanding Achievements
in Higher Education.
The SIFT-RMIT cooperative undergraduate
program in Transport and Logistics Management was reviewed
and ratified by the Academic Degrees Office of the State
Council. |
2002 |
The academic
Degrees Office of the State Council formally approved the
SIFT-RMIT joint M.A. program in Transport and Logistics
Management, entitled to confer a degree from Australia.

2003 |
The programs
in Transport and Logistics as well as in Economics (International
Business) were granted the License in Cooperative Education
with Foreign Partners by the Shanghai Municipal Commission
of Education.

SIFT-California School
of English & Business
Founded in 1960, the Shanghai Institute of Foreign
Trade (SIFT), formerly affiliated to the Ministry of Foreign Trade
and Economic Cooperation, has been placed under the jurisdiction
of the Shanghai Municipality since 1994. The only university of
its kind in East China dedicated to the education of foreign economic
relations and trade, SIFT cultivates mainly various kinds of senior
specialized personnel in international business operations. SIFT
has been leading the country in teaching of International Business
English, which has been approved as a key course by the Shanghai
Municipal Commission of Education.
SIFT-California School of English and Business,
approved by the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Education, is
a Sino-foreign jointly-run school affiliated to SIFT. Approved
by the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Education in 2000, SIFT
started to cooperate with the University of Central Lancashire,(UCLan)
U.K., to offer an English course for international business by
introducing advanced modules from UCLan.
The University of Central Lancashire, a comprehensive
university with a history spanning a century, runs diploma, bachelor's
degree.,master's degree and Ph.D. programs. With a carefully designed
syllabus in place, the university takes the lead and enjoys a
high prestige in Britain in its teaching and research of Engish
for International Business. Theemployment rate of its students
ranks among the best in Britain.
Approved by the Shanghai Municipal Commission
of Education in 2002, SIFT-UClan joint program started to enroll
regular full-time students for a diploma program to study English
for International Business(EBI). Upon graduation, students are
granted an academic diploma from both SIFT and the University
of Central Lancashire.
In 2003, out of the 74 graduates from SIFT-UCLan
EIB joint program, 56 of them applied to, and were approved by,
the University of Central Lancashire for admittance to undergraduate
program to pursue a bachelor's degree. Because of the good reputation
enjoyed by SIFT-UCLan EIB joint program, the 56 students, while
applying for a British visa, were all accorded with the favorable
treatment of interview exemption and issued a visa without any
problems by the British Consulate General to Shanghai. The other
18 graduates all found a job either in Shanghai or in other cities,
with average monthly salary ranging from 1,500 to 4,000 Yuan RMB. |
