School of International Studies

School of International Economy and Trade (SIET) is the biggest school in Shanghai Institute of Foreign Trade (SHIFT), with the largest number of students, the most complete specialties on International Business and an excellent faculty.
The SIET develops its curriculums and programs in close correspondence to the practice in Chinese business criteria, especially keeping compact to the Shanghai four-center development strategy: International Economy center, International Trade center, International Finance center and International Logistics center. SIET is devoted to educating professionals on modern international economy and trade for enterprises as well as government authorities.
The SIET offers ten undergraduate programs, one second-bachelor and one technological program, belonging respectively to Economics and Management disciplines. There are also two master programs named International Trade and Enterprise Management. Academically led by President Prof. Wang Xinkui, the International Trade master program is selected as one of the key disciplines in Shanghai. The major group of SIET, cored with International Economy and Trade, has been named as the key project of ^Education High-Place of Foreign Trade ̄ by Shanghai Municipal Committee of Education.
SIET is blessed with an excellent faculty experienced in teaching and research. Among the full-time teachers, 50% are associate professors or doctors or even with higher degree, 5 are Shuguang Scholars, 5 have earned the award of Excellent Young Teacher of Shanghai, 2 Bao-Steel Excellent Teachers, and 2 Excellent Backup Young Teachers. SIET has also invited many guest teachers from famous universities and multinational companies to join in the SIET teaching and research programs. In 2005, SIET has earned 5 awards of Shanghai Excellent Teaching, and 4 curriculums are named as the fine curriculums and focal curriculums by Shanghai Municipal Committee of Education.
There are also many research centers in SIET. They are Research Center of WTO and Multilateral Trade Regulations, Research Center of Regional Economy and Trade Unification, Institute of International Business Affairs, Institute of E-Commerce, Institute of Value Chain of Global Industrial, Institute of International Logistics, Institute of International Enterprise Management, Institute of Education of International Economy and Trade, Center of Case Study and Research. SIET has made many achievements in the areas of WTO and Multilateral Trade Regulations, Regional Economy and Trade Unification, Knowledge Rights, Imports and Exports Trade, Industrial Economics, Operation of Capital, International Promotion and etc.
SIET helps students, by a number of means, such as foreign students exchange project, Profession Development Project (PDP), kinds of lectures and social practice, to knit a multiple networks to broaden their mind, enrich their experience and encourage them to make career design on the first day rather than the last day of college life.
SIET offers nearly 180 curriculums, on a variety of levels, to different types of students, such as M.A. graduate students, students studying for a second bachelor's degree, regular four-year students, two-year students, and night-school students. SIET also provides some elective curriculums on International Economy and Trade, Accounting and Marketing for other schools at Songjiang campus. SIET has, in recent years, also attracted many overseas students from France, the Netherlands, Japan, South Korea, and Vietnam. In addition, in the past decades, SIET has, through its training courses, turned out a large body of foreign economic relations and trade personnel for enterprises and government authorities in Shanghai, cities in Changjiang Triangle area as well as other Chinese cities and provinces.
While maintaining its edge in traditionally strong specialties and featured curriculums, SIET, for the purpose of improving the ability of theoretical analysis and practical operation in modern business, constantly adjusts and optimizes its curriculum structure, updates its teaching contents, stresses innovations in teaching skills, introduces computers and multimedia into classroom teaching, and promotes case studying, double-language teaching and simulation practice.
Moreover, SIET is active in international academic exchanges and cooperation. Approved by the Shanghai Municipal Committee of Education in 1998, SIFT-RMIT International Business School, a Sino-foreign joint education program between the Shanghai Institute of Foreign Trade (SIFT) and Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT), Australia, is affiliated to and located in SIFT. SIET is now taking part in the management and operation of this school. It is 4 years since SIET began to collaborate with IVEY Business School, a famous university in Canada, on teaching of classical cases, and ^IVEY Business Cases ̄ has become one of the most popular curriculums in SHIFT. In addition, some short-term culture tour projects and Sino-Foreign student exchange projects are under rapid development. SIET is also seeking to offer exciting leisure times for students. There are many programs directed by SIET Student Association every year, such as Thesis Tournament on Economy and Trade, Competition on Import-Export Simulation, Fantastic Art Festival and etc. In 2005, a team from SIET won the champion of the first ^IVEY Case Tournament ̄.
SIET has established Porlinton Scholarship. After graduation, students may continue their research in SIFT or other famous universities in China or abroad; or they may join in the government agencies or some famous enterprises. Employment of SIET graduates is constantly kept at the rate of 100%. SIET has established a firm cooperation with many enterprises all around the world, and up to date more than 20 enterprises have become regular practice bases for our students.
